Sant Francesc

Sant Francesc is a basilica on the Plaça de Sant Francesc in Palma in Mallorca, to which a monastery belongs. The basilica and convent were declared protected cultural assets in 1981. The basilica dates from the reign of Jaume II when the Franciscans built a Gothic-style convent here in 1281. The church was later expanded, the structure improved by replacing the beams with a cross vault. The facade, now baroque, dates from the 17th century. The interior of the church consists of a single nave, divided into eight sections with side chapels and pointed arches. The church is the largest of the Balearic Islands after the Cathedral of Palma. The portal, a work by Spaniard Francisco de Herrera, consists of a group of sculptures. The central sculpture represents the Immaculate Conception.
