Mercado da Ribeira

The Mercado da Ribeira is a market hall where fresh fish, vegetables and fruit have been sold since the 19th century. The hall was built in 1876 according to plans by the engineer Frederico Ressano Garcia on the north bank of the Tagus in the immediate vicinity of the Cais do Sodré and opened on January 1, 1882. Ressano Garcia used elements of iron architecture in the design. A fire on June 7, 1893 destroyed parts of the east side of the market. The hall was expanded from 1902 under the architect João Piloto. From the beginning of the 1990s, the first floor of the building was converted into a cultural center at the instigation of the city administration. Since then, various musical events have taken place there. After a gradual decline, the city sought a new operator in 2010 to revitalize the market. The Lisbon Livestyle magazine Time Out Lisboa was awarded the contract. In 2014, the west wing of the market hall was completely redesigned: 35 food stands around the central interior with wooden benches and tables offer fast food, nouvelle cuisine and traditional Portuguese cuisine, with a focus on regional products. According to the very successful concept, Time Out will now operate eight additional markets in Europe and the USA internationally in 2019. In addition to the new gastromic area, the Osthalle will continue to be used as a classic market hall with market stalls for fruit, vegetables, meat and fish.
