Brixner cathedral

The Dom Mariae admission to heaven and St. Kassian is the largest sacred building in the South Tyrolean city of Brixen and bishop’s church of the Roman Catholic diocese of Bozen-Brixen. The cathedral is titled Cathedral and Basilica minor and is under the patronage of the Assumption of Mary and Saint Cassian. Together with the surrounding buildings, including the cathedral cloister, the Johannes chapel and the Frauenkirche, it is part of the Brixner cathedral district. The bishop’s residence was soon moved from Säben to Brixen, from where he ruled the formerly influential bishopric of Brixen. In 1964 the episcopal seat was moved to Bolzano, and the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has since acted as a concathedral. Nevertheless, the bishop’s cathedra and the cathedral chapter are still located in Brixen, which means that the Brixner Dom takes the place of the highest-ranking church in the diocese. The first three bishops of Bozen-Brixen are also buried here.
